Have we learned nothing?

The FBI is asking Congress for broad new powers to issue administrative subpoenas (self-issued, no judge required). This, of course, directly violates the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution, but I am afraid that in this environment of fear that the Bush Administration continues to propagate, politicians will be unable to resist the temptation to be seen as doing "something" in the name of national security, even if that something is laying the groundwork for the rise of a fascist state.
